6 Things You Need to Do This Fall in Reno-Tahoe
Pull out your flannels and scarves, grab your favorite cup of coffee and get outside in Reno-Tahoe to experience all the destination has to offer during this most colorful season. Here’s a few must-do activities in the region this season:
1. Celebrate Nevada in Carson City – As Nevada’s State Capitol, Carson Cityis the center point for all things Nevada. Tour Carson City’s historic west side on a guided theatrical Ghost Walktour, including a special tour Oct. 19 when the homes, normally occupied by their residents, are open to the public for an immersive experience.October 31, Nevada celebrates its birthday and Carson City is the place to be. A massive paradeand party takes place Oct. 26 on the streets of downtown Carson City. Celebrating 100 years of Nevada Counties, this year’s Nevada Day celebration is one not to be missed.
2. See Fall Colors in Carson Valley – The fall colors in Carson Valleyare top-notch and best experienced on two wheels or on horseback as you check out the multitude of trails in and around the Carson Valley. The Genoa Trails System is just one of the many systems and includes 16 miles of trails open to hikers, equestrians, bikers and four-legged friends. Scenic views and fall colors are splendid and even more rewarding after a challenging hike. Afterward, reward yourself with a soak in a natural mineral hot spring at David Walley’s Hot Springs and Resort.
3. Get Outdoors in North Lake Tahoe – Fall is secretly the best time to visit North Lake Tahoe. From gorgeous fall colors, peaceful beaches and dual-season outdoor recreation opportunities, there is simply no better time to experience all Lake Tahoe has to offer. The cooler temps make for a comfortable hike while you check out the gorgeous fall colors around the lake, or enjoy the sunshine while lakeside dining at one of the many lakefront destinations. And a little-known fact… the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe are warmest during the fall, making it a great time to paddle board or kayak on the calm waters.
4. Go Fishing in Reno/Sparks – Outdoor recreation doesn’t stop when you get to Reno/Sparks. Fly fishing on the Truckee River in downtown Reno is at its prime during this season. Or take a drive out to Pyramid Lake and experience this impressive saltwater desert lake – it’s larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe and makes a gorgeous spot to photograph.
5. Connect with Nature in South Lake Tahoe – Fall is the season to chill out in South Lake Tahoe. With fewer crowds it’s the time to come for relaxation and vacation. The fall foliage is stunning, and easily enjoyed via zipline or tubing at Heavenly Lake Tahoe. For nature lovers, the Fall Fish Fest at Taylor Creekis an opportunity to see the Kokanee salmon migration. Perfect for kids, the festival features activities and educational stations.
6. Get Spooked in Virginia City – The historic mountain town of Virginia Cityis reportedly one of the most haunted locations in the United States, so there’s really no better place to be during the month of October, or Hauntober, as they call it. It’s a family-friendly destination with month-long events and activities ranging from Voices of the Past tours of the Silver Terrace Cemetery, ghost tours, a Day Out with Thomas on the V&T Railroad, a parade and safe trick-or-treating at St. Mary’s Art Center.
