New Lanark World Heritage Site - the 18th century Mill Village less than one hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh

New Lanark World Heritage Site is a worthy place to visit. It is set in the River Clyde Valley and was built by Robert Owen and David Dale at the birth of the Industrial Revolution.
They built the mill and houses to accommodate the workers and a school for the children where all the children were educated and employed in the mills too. There is also a church and a shop. An Institute building and other buildings were purpose-built to encourage the work force to live well, work hard and prosper. There is now a hotel in one of the former mills with magnificent views over the river
There is a guided tour accessed from the Institute building which also houses the original Victorian engineering. The famous Annie McCloud experience transports you back into the Victorian era.

Carry on through the mill grounds and you come to the New Lanark nature reserve with many walks through the wooded hillside to the magnificent falls of Clyde where the River Clyde tumble over and crested the power for generating the steam to run the mill machinery. The river is now dammed and the water flow diverted to a power station to generate electric power.
The falls are seen in mid flow in my photos as we have had much rain. However, in particularly heavy rain, the falls are spectacular and you can really feel the thunder of their power. Crossing over the Writ bridge which dams the river, you enter into Core House nature reserve with lots more walks
Core House itself can be viewed by private arrangement. In this reserve, the ruins of Corra Castle can been seen and is where the water fall nearest the mills takes its name as the castle overlooks.

This area is a very good day trip and one that should not be missed when visiting Scotland.
There is a market on Saturdays and Sundays in the village. One outside and one inside the outside. One is your usual type of thing where you do not need to make your items and can just buy wholesale and mark up. The inside one is an Artisan Makers event where 99.9% of the stall holders (including me) make their items. If the visitors are lucky, I will let you try my fruit balsamic vinegars!
