Lazy Turtle RiverFront Grill & Tiki Bar in Palm Bay, Florida
By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

On the advice of a new friend we met last weekend, we made reservations at The Lazy Turtle RiverFront Grill & Tiki Bar in Palm Bay, Florida. Now we have another option when considering our favorite local waterfront dining choices.

Sal Tawilco opened The Lazy Turtle Riverfront Tiki Sky Bar & Grill in Palm Bay about a year ago. While other restaurants closed during the pandemic challenges, The Lazy Turtle thrived. We arrived to find the parking lot nearly full and guests enjoying the complimentary valet parking.

The Lazy Turtle offers two outdoor patios and Tiki bars, two indoor dining rooms, live music and Happy Hour. On our visit, there was a live band on one patio and a steel drum player on the other.  Both patios have an unobstructed view of the river and guests can take stairs down to a large dock. Whether indoors or out, The Lazy Turtle is the place for “guests to be lazy and extremely relaxed and let us do all the work for you.”

The menus includes fresh fish and seafood, prime steaks, burgers and sushi and an "around the world wine list." For our appetizer, we choose the Island Coconut Shrimp with sweet chili dipping sauce. We often order coconut shrimp when we dine out. Some are good. Some are not. The coconut shrimp at The Lazy Turtle are exceptional. Our four shrimp were huge and delicious with batter that was tasty without being overwhelming. When Sal Tawilco stopped by our table to chat, Tom joked that these were more like small lobsters than shrimp. I do not like to drink and drive so Tom and I both ordered Sweet Tea. It is something we drink daily. Tom can be a bit picky about his Sweet Tea but he declared these to be "delicious."

For our entrees, I chose the eighteen ounce Delmonico Rib Eye Steak with "Mash Potato, Seasonal Vegetable, Butter, Demi Glaze." My steak was fabulously tender and tasty. The mashed potatoes were a bit runny but still tasty. Tom ordered the Fried Jumbo Shrimp Lazy Turtle Basket with Sweet Potato Fries. Once again, Tom's shrimp were huge. These had a lighter batter than the Coconut Shrimp appetizer and where other restaurants often overcook the shrimp, these were just right.

Sal Tawilco recommended we try Key West Key Lime Pie (with limes authentically from Key West) and the Belgium Chocolate Lava Cake for our desserts. Both desserts were served in generous portions. I am truly a chocoholic so I loved the chocolate overload of the lava cake. Tom can be skeptical about Key Lime Pie desserts but he enjoyed this one immensely. The authentic Key Lime flavor was evident and the texture was firm as it should be.
