In 1946, Pioneertown was founded by a cowboy movie stars Roy Rogers and Gene Autry along with a group of Hollywood investors. Dick Curtis, Bud Abbott, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, The Sons Of The Pioneers, Russell Hayden, Frank McDonald, Tommy Carr and Terry Frost each invested $500 to purchase 32,000 acres of land and create an Old West movie set 125 miles east of Los Angeles.
Not only was their plan to create a movie set where they could film, they wanted Pioneertown to be a place tourists would want to visit. They built 1880s-style false-front facades but with interiors that had stuff for visitors to see and do.
They built frontier stables, saloons and jails on the outside with ice cream parlors, bowling alleys and motels inside. More than 50 films and television shows were filmed here in the 1940's and 1950's. You can still see mock gunfights on Mane (yep, we said Mane) Street.
