FATMAN - movie review

FATMAN - movie review by Steven Skelley
I love holiday favorites like ELF and HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS but sometimes I crave some Krampus to go along with my Kris Kringle. And that is just how my movie watching buddy Curt and I sat down one December afternoon to enjoy the 2020 Mel Gibson holiday shoot-em-up FATMAN.
FATMAN is one absurdity after another that's filmed as though it's a serious action
flick. Mel Gibson is a weary Santa Claus who drives a beat-up, red pickup truck and
likes to flirt with Ruth (Mrs. Claus) when he's not practicing his firearm skills. Things are tough nowadays. Santa and Ruth can barely afford to feed their elf workers. When the U.S. military shows up offering a sleigh-load of cash in exchange for the elves building military equipment, Santa has no choice but to accept the job. Soon, the elf workshop is a high security area filled with armed soldiers.
If things weren't bad enough, a wealthy, evil child wants revenge for receiving a lump of coal from Santa. He does what any other disappointed naughty child would do. He hires a professional assassin to kill Santa. Luckily, the assassin also hates Santa. But, how will he find Santa to kill him? Simple! Just ask a mailman! All those children's letter to Santa have to be delivered somewhere, after all.
The assassin - known as Skinny Man - is portrayed by familiar face Walton Goggins. You may remember him from DJANGO UNCHAINED or SONS OF ANARCHY. Curt and I agree that Goggins has the best psycho-eyes of any actor since the young Bruce Dern. Skinny Man merrily murders his way north to locate Santa. Once he arrives, he turns the snow red as he shoots and kills every soldier with ease until he's face-to-face with Santa. It all comes down to Skinny Man and his assault rifle versus Santa with a handgun in each hand.
Will Skinny Man kill the Fatman or will Santa prove to be tougher than he looks? If you enjoyed the dark and absurd A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY with William Shatner as we did, you will probably laugh your way through FATMAN too.
