The Museum of the Rockies is a repository for state and federal fossils, a college-level division of Montana State University and a Smithsonian Affiliate. It is recognized as one of the world's finest research and history museums with an extensive collection of dinosaur fossils, including a mounted T.Rex skeleton! When we visited Bozeman, Montana, we knew we had to visit the Museum of the Rockies and see the fossil collection ourselves.

Rocky Rex, the museum's famously T.Rex mascot, was discovered by MOR field paleontologists in November of 2012 in the badlands of Eastern Montana. Fossils have been found across much of Montana and the paleontology department at MOR is dedicated to researching the state and surrounding regions. The museum houses one of the largest collections of North American dinosaurs in the world including the gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex and the horned Triceratops from juveniles to giants.
Fossils are on display in the museum’s Siebel Dinosaur Complex. Visitors can view Big Al, a nearly complete Allosaurus that lived during the Jurassic Period. There are also numerous dinosaur eggs and babies. In addition to dinosaurs, the museum contains a large collection of prehistoric mammals that once roamed the state including Mammoths, Rhinos, and Bone-Crushing Dogs.
The Taylor Planetarium at Museum of the Rockies offers Digistar 4K digital projection on a 40-foot dome. All planetarium shows are included with the price of museum admission and run for approximately 30 minutes.
