Our ship arrived in Katakalon, Greece and we boarded a bus to Olympia to visit the site of the first Olympic games.
Olympia is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Olympia was primarily dedicated to Zeus and drew visitors from all over the ancient Greek world.
The Olympic Games were held every four years from the eighth century BC to the fourth century AD.
Olympia once had over seventy buildings and temples. Most are now in ruins. The Temple of Zeus survives only as stones scattered on the ground.
Guests are invited to take their places on the starting blocks of the site where the first Olympic running races were held. Almost everyone wanted to take a photo of themselves running on the very same ground where the ancient Greeks athletes ran in competition.
It is awe inspiring to stroll among the ruins of this amazing place, to touch the columns and walls that once stood in grandeur and to sense to spirit of the world-changing history that began here.
After visiting the Olympia ruins, we visited the museum. Inside is an impressive collection of ancient Greek statues rescued from the ruins and placed on display for all to enjoy once again. When you consider that Olympia had been forgotten and buried under twenty feet of dirt, the collection is even more of a treasure to view.
Olympia, Greece is a place we could visit again and again. We can't wait to return.
